ICOT FREE-SOFTWARE News Letter No.1

1 July, 1992

[Table of Contents]

[Introduction]

We, the Institute for New Generation Computer Technology (ICOT), have made our original and advanced software available to the public free of charge in order to contribute toward the progress of computer science. Anyone wanting to use this "ICOT Free Software" may freely do so and may also freely modify, copy and distribute it provided that ICOT gives no warranty on this software. We hope that this software will be available for your research and development activities.

This newsletter is published in order to provide users new information on ICOT Free Software. New issues will be published successively to announce the latest changes in the software.

A list of ICOT Free Software was distributed at the International Conference on Fifth Generation Computer Systems 1992, held at the beginning of June, 1992. If you do not have a copy of this list, please contact us at the address below.

If there are persons in your neighborhood who are interested in ICOT Free Software, please let us know their names and addresses so that we can send them newsletters.

[How and When to Access the Software]

We are now preparing to distribute ICOT Free Software through anonymous ftp from the ftp-server machine at ICOT. Setup will be finished in August, and the released software will be announced through this newsletter.

[Environment for Execution]

To execute the KL1 and ESP programs included in this software, some special machines are needed such as the parallel inference machine PIM / Multi-PSI for KL1 programs, and the sequential inference machine PSI for ESP programs. However, PDSS and CESP are available for UNIX workstations.

PDSS (PIMOS Development Support System) is a system to execute KL1 programs on BSD UNIX workstations, and compatibility with the KL1 system on the Multi-PSI/PIM is preserved except in the implementation method and execution efficiency. Executing large scale KL1 programs on PDSS directly is difficult because of several constraints, but relatively small programs or parts of large programs are executable on PDSS. Notes on the executability of KL1 programs on PDSS will be published with the programs. PDSS itself is also involved with ICOT Free Software.

CESP (Common ESP) is a system to execute ESP programs on UNIX workstations, and compatibility with the ESP system is preserved except for I/O and the specification of a few predicates. Not only the programs written in CESP, but those written in ESP as well are executable on the CESP system with slight modifications. Notes on porting from ESP to CESP will be published with programs. The CESP language processor is distributed free of charge for academic use from AI Language Research Institute (AIR), Ltd. If you would like a tape of the CESP system, write to the following address:
