A 海外調査報告

　本ワーキンググループの活動の一環として行った海外調査について報告する。

A.1.1 概要

名称：　Work Activities Coordination and Collaboration (WACC'99)

日時：　1999年2月22日（月） から 2月25日（木）

場所：　Cathedral Hill Hotel （米国カリフォルニア州サンフランシスコ）

主催：　ACM SIGCHI, SIGGROUP, SIGMOD, SIGSOFT

協賛：　ISPA, TCDE

開催地であるサンフランシスコは、坂道を走るケーブルカー、ゴールデンゲートブリッジ、フィッシャーマンズウォーフなど観光の名所が多い、風光明媚な土地である。

　会場となったホテルは、サンフランシスコの中心部をほぼ南北に走るVan Ness Streetと東西に走るGeary Streetの角に位置し交通の便の良いところであった。

　ACMのSIGは今まで個々に活動してきたが、本会議はsoftware engineering, human-computer interaction, databases, groupwareの4つのSIGに跨る分野で新しいコミュニティーを作ろうという意図で企画、開催されたものである。

　従って、参加者や発表内容もバラエティが豊かで（別の言い方ではまとまりのない）、焦点がはっきりしないと言う印象も受けた。

　参加者は約140名で、日本からの参加者は我々を含め7名であった。

A.1.2 基調講演：Managing Processes in the Network Economy

（講演者：Thomas W. Malone, MIT Sloan School of Management）

講演者のMalone教授はMIT Center for Coordination Scienceを創設し、現在そこの所長である。またグループウェアの先駆けとなったInformation Lensの開発をしたことで有名である。

以下、基調講演の要点を記す。

Druckerの著作"The Age of Social Transformation"を例にして今後の社会の変化をもたらす駆動力として以下のものを紹介

社会変化に対応するに際し考慮すべき要素として

今後のエコノミーの姿として

が普通になってくるであろう。

（講演の途中で標準的な平屋を1軒建てるのにどのくらいの時間があれば出来るかという質問を聴衆に投げかけ、サンディエゴで行われたコンテストのビデオを使うなどいろいろ工夫をしていた。このときのビデオでは、多くの建築関係業者が一丸となって取り組んだ結果完成までに要する時間はなんと4時間18分であったが、当然ながらこのようなやり方では全く経済的ではないとコメントであっった。）

既にこのような形態で成功している企業の例としてNokia（通信分野　売り上げ1億6千万ドル、市場シェア6%、従業員5名）、Topsy Tail（Haircare products 売り上げ8千万ドル、従業員3名、20のアウトソーシング先）、イタリアのプラト近傍の繊維工業（従業員5名以下の会社が15000社以上ある）をあげていた。

Internetが普及した理由として下記の点を上げていた

• 誰でもが自由で

• protocolに従えばシステムの中でどのような役割(Service provider, Service User, Network provider)でも演じることが可能な

• highly decentralized system

これからの組織を考える場合、Internetをモデルにした"decentralized connected" decision makersが出現してくるだろう。

今後の社会ではプロセスの考えが重要になって来て、Process design/execution, Structured/Unstructured processの観点で見て以下のような取り組みが必要となってくる。

Step4 How can these dependencies be managed(i.e., coordinated)?

Flow, Sharing, Fitと言う概念を使って分析することを提唱していた。

A.1.3 チュートリアル：XML: Modeling Data and Metadata

（講師：Rohit Khare, UC Irvine）

参加者：17名

CSCW（Computer Supported Cooperative Work）システムで重要な働きを演じるXMLについての講義。

XMLに関する最低限知っておくべき事柄として、以下の項目をあげていた。

• The Evolution of XML

• The Origin of (Document) Species

• XML 1.0, Namespaces, XLink, and XSL

• Capturing the State of Distributed Systems

講義の後半では、参加者が関心を持っているトピックスについての討議を行った。そのなかでかなり現実味を帯びた内容として実際の薬品のビジネスでサプライチェーンシステムのProcess DefinitionをXMLでどのように表現するかと言うことを取り上げていた。

このようにかなり現実的なテーマが参加者から提出されるほどXMLに対する関心が高いことがうかがえた。
